Plastic and reconstructive surgeon Wendy Chen’s clinical expertise spans the breadth of reconstructive surgery, from scalp to toes, breast/chest reconstruction, colorectal/urologic cancer reconstruction, ortho/trauma reconstruction and challenging wounds. Dr. Chen has been recognized as a top doctor by Washingtonian magazine and Castle Connelly. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and holds a subspecialty (CAQ) certification in hand surgery. She received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where she was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Society, then completed an integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During residency, Dr. Chen spent an additional year in the basic science laboratory investigating whole-eye microsurgical allotransplantation, and she pursued elective training in gender affirming surgery at Mount Sinai and Oregon Health and Science University. At UCLA, Dr. Chen completed a hand and microsurgery fellowship. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Chen worked as a hand surgery specialist at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas — the busiest trauma center in the country. She was recognized as a Texas Super Doctors Rising Star, a 40 Under 40 Houston Business Journal honoree, an Association of Women Surgeons 40 Under 40 honoree, a McGovern Medical School Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award/Champion of Clinical Learning Environment, and she won the inaugural John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Distinguished Faculty Award in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Dr. Chen is passionate about medical education and activism for diversity, justice, safety and equity in surgical training and normalizing surgeon families, for which she is a frequent national speaker and serves on/leads multiple national committees. She has numerous publications and international presentations, and has won many awards for her activism and work in clinical, basic science and education research.
